B.J. is a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator who joined the ASPCA in 2011 and is currently Senior Director of ProLearning. In this newly created role, B.J. serves as the second-in-command to the VP of Strategic Initiatives, ensuring the success of major cross-departmental projects (such as the $100k Challenge), providing leadership in the ProLearning department, and contributing to the advancement of the integrated Community Outreach strategic plan.

Previously, B.J. served as Community Initiatives Director (until December 2013,) most recently providing support, training, and grant assistance to shelters in Vermont, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and D.C. as well as serving as liaison to the Shelby County, AL Partnership Community.

Before joining the ASPCA, B.J. was the chief executive of the Humane Society of Chittenden County, Vermont’s oldest and largest animal welfare organization, from 2005 to 2011. B.J. has nearly 15 years of experience in the non-profit arena, and has worked in the human service sector as both an executive director and community relations director, in higher education as both an instructor and researcher, and in politics as senior campaign staff and director of communications for a gubernatorial campaign. Since 2001 he’s served as a member and former longtime chair of the Samara Foundation of Vermont’s Scholarship Committee, and is a former board member of Outright Vermont – both organizations dedicated to support and service for LGBTQ youth. He served two years on the Burlington, VT Mayoral Budget Task Force and on the Police Chief’s Community Policing Advisory Board. He’s a longtime member of the board of the Vermont Humane Federation and the Advisory Council of the New England Federation of Humane Societies.

A native of the Boston, MA area, B.J. lives near the shores of Lake Champlain in Colchester, VT with his partner Erin and their cat (Kitten) and two dogs (Eli, a laid-back chocolate lab and Freddie, a feisty corgi.)
