Kathy Johnson

Kathy A. Johnson began learning Dialogue Education Principles and Practices from Dr. Jane Vella in 1989 and become certified as a Master Trainer with Dr. Vella in 1998.  Kathy has incorporated Dialogue Education principles and practices into her teaching, consulting, and technical assistance work for more than 25 years.  She is grateful for the attention to heart and soul she finds in Dialogue Education.  She strives to interact with each person as a “Subject of their own Learning,” with compassion and respect.

Kathy has her own business, Vermont Equity Training and Consulting, which focuses on gender equity, diversity, and creating positive school climates and environments free of discrimination and stereotyping.  Kathy teaches graduate courses on gender equity through Saint Michael’s College in Winooski, Vermont.  Kathy is a Senior Training Consultant for the A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE ® Institute of the Anti-Defamation League. In this role she works with educators, administrators, community members, and middle and high school students on anti-bias education.

Kathy is also a founding member of CQ Strategies, LLC, a collective of 5 consultants working together on cultural competency and organizational change. CQ Strategies has provided series of trainings and consulting services to more than 30 organizations in Vermont since 2010, many through the “We All Belong” program with the City of Burlington.

From 1996 to 2005, Kathy was Director of Equity Initiatives at the Vermont Institutes, where she, Peter Perkins, and Nicole Saginor embedded Dialogue Education into the Teacher Associates program and all Equity work at the Institute.  These three collaborators contributed a chapter describing their work in Dr. Vella’s book “Dialogue Education at Work: A Case Book” (2003).

Kathy has served as an elected official as well as on state, regional, and national boards and task forces. She is an elected Justice of the Peace, a member of the Vermont Advisory Council on Bullying, Hazing, and Harassment Prevention, and a Diversity & Inclusion Task Force member for the American Association of University Women.  She was formerly a town Select Board member and on the Boards of Directors for the Vermont Teacher Diversity Scholarship Program and Vermont Works for Women (nee Northern New England Tradeswomen).

Kathy has a Masters of Science in Mediation and Applied Conflict Studies from the Woodbury Institute at Champlain College.  She lives in Central Vermont where she enjoys yoga, hiking, x-country skiing, being with friends and family, and spending time in the natural world.
